Haematology Ward

Welcome to Sidilega Haematology ward.

As one of our mandate, we are proud in bringing the 1st state of the art Health facility to Botswana in the form of a newly built 8 bedded Haematology Ward.

Haematology is a subspecialised unit within the Department of Medicine which deals with general haematology and haemato-oncological disorders.

The ward is run by Heamatologist Dr Elizabeth Botsile who consultants in general haematology, haemato-oncological disorders and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The following diseases and conditions are managed by the:

  • Acute and Chronic Leukaemias
  • Lymphomas
  • Multiple Myeloma and Other Plasma Cell Disorders
  • Myeloproliferative Neoplasms
  • Myelodysplasia
  • Bleeding and Clotting Disorders
  • Inherited or Acquired Anaemias
  • Platelet Disorders

The division has a close working relationship with haematopathologists, histopathologists, blood bank and transfusion medicine specialists, radiologists, oncologists, other subspecialties in internal medicine and surgeons.

Services provided are as follows;

Bone Marrow Aspirate and Trephine Biopsy: For diagnostic and staging purposes of haematological disorders. It is also a method of assessing response towards treatment i.e. chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy: Intravenous chemotherapy is administered to both inpatients and outpatients. Intrathecal Chemotherapy is administered via the spinal fluid as prophylaxis or treatment of certain haematological malignancies.

Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT): Autologous and Allogenic (Sibling, matched unrelated donor) HSCT are performed for certain haematological malignancies. This includes harvesting stem cells from either autologous or allogenic sources. Recently, services for haploidentical HSCT have been commenced.
